What you will learn in Waves
1. What Is a Wave?
A wave propagates a disturbance without net transport of matter — wave speed, wavelength, and frequency all trade off through v = fλ.
2. Sound Waves
Sound is a longitudinal pressure wave — frequency sets pitch, amplitude sets loudness, and the two are genuinely independent.
3. Speed of Sound
Sound travels fastest through the stiffest, most tightly-packed medium — solids beat liquids beat gases.
4. Water Waves
A transverse surface wave forms circular wavefronts from a single source, and interference fringes from two.
5. Electromagnetic Waves
Radio, visible light, and gamma rays are the same wave at wildly different frequencies — all sharing one speed in vacuum.
6. Wave Interference
Two coherent sources superpose into a fringe pattern — bright where crests meet crests, dark where crests meet troughs.
7. Standing Waves
Two identical waves traveling in opposite directions interfere into a fixed pattern of nodes and antinodes — the harmonic series.
8. Resonance & Real-World Connections
Driving a string or air column near its own resonant frequency spikes the response sharply — the same resonance from Oscillations & SHM, now in a wave.
9. Beats
Two tones of nearby frequency heard together swell and fade |f₁ − f₂| times a second — the sum-to-product identity, heard. Musicians tune by making the beats vanish; an unknown fork is found from a beat count and a little wax.
